Dashavatar Temple-Deogarh

Back

This fine temple of the Gupta period, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the earliest known Panchayatan Temple in north India. The figures of Ganga and Yamuna adorn the carved doorway leading to the sanctum sanctorum. The large carved panels along the side walls depict scenes from Vaishnava mythology. These panels are unique and are not found anywhere else in the world.

In the 5th-6th century the Shikhar architecture was introduced for the first time here. Only the lower portion remains of the spire, which was the most important part of the temple.
