Banke Bihari Temple is the most popular temple in Vrindavan. ‘Banke’ means bent at three angles, referring to the image of Krishna playing the flute: where his right knee is bent across the left knee, right hand is bent to hold the flute, and the head is titled slightly. It was built in 1860 and is a classic example of Rajasthani architecture. The facade of arches and pillars gives the three-storey temple a distinctive look.The image of Banke Bihari was discovered in Nidhi Vana by Swami Haridas Ji, the great Krishna devotee, belonging to the Nimbarka sect. It was rebuilt in 1921 by the disciples of Swami Haridas ji.
